Guardian Home Program

We are currently searching for a guardian home for a female puppy from our May 2023 Joule x Nash litter.

What is a guardian home?

We believe that all dogs should have a loving family that will care for them for their entire life.

Our guardian program allows a family to own the pick of the litter puppy at no charge, in exchange for caring for one of our breeding dogs (under our terms as noted).

Legal ownership of the dog remains with Heart Lake Aussies until he/she has completed his/her breeding career, duration varies and is case by case. For example, minimum 3 litters in 5 years.

At the end of their breeding career, he/she will be spayed or neutered, at the expense of Heart Lake Aussies, and then ownership will be fully transferred to the Guardian Family.

The Guardian dog will be completely health tested by 12 months of age (some tests may be done as early as 16 weeks of age) at no cost to the guardian family, prior to any breeding.

Each one of our breeding dogs will vary slightly in his/her participation in our breeding program, and as such the agreements with the Guardian Homes will vary accordingly.

Requirements:

  • Must live within approximately 1-2 hours of Lake Country, BC, and have plans to remain in this area for the next 4 -5 years. Guardian agrees to maintain this contract even if they relocate out of the area, including flying the dog back to the breeder at the expense of the guardian.

  • Must have a fully fenced yard. Your dog must not ever be unattended while not in a fenced area

  • Willingness to feed top quality food recommended by breeder.

  • We prefer that a guardian owns their own home (case by case basis).

  • Must understand and be willing to assume the additional responsibilities involved in caring for an intact dog.

  • Must be willing to maintain open communication with us and allow us to have regular contact with the dog.

  • You agree to keep in close contact with breeder, regularly sending photos of dog and gives clearance to breeder to use any photos sent for marketing purposes (social media, website, etc.)

  • Must contact breeder once female dog comes into heat.

  • No other intact male dogs (not neutered) can be living on premises.

  • Guardian Home understands that they are responsible for all veterinarian (outside of health testing), all food, training, and grooming expenses that accrue.

  • Must be willing to obedience train and socialize the puppy.

  • Must be willing to continue with crate training the puppy.

  • Guardian families must have reliable transportation and must be willing to attend appointments for health testing and breeding, and bring the dog to us as needed for breeding, and whelping throughout the year.

    • Females: Once the mature dog has completed and passed all health testing and goes into heat, the breeding dog would be returned to Heart Lake Aussies to be bred. A heat cycle will usually last between 14 and 21 days. During this time, we will need access to her for breeding related appointments. Once she has been bred, she will remain with her Guardian Family until one week before her due date. At that time, the Guardian dog will come back to stay with us throughout her pregnancy, and will be returned once her pups are 9 weeks of age. Guardian Families are welcomed and strongly encouraged to visit with scheduled appointments while their Guardian Dog is at Heart Lake Aussies. There will be a small compensation per litter as a "thank you" for your patience while your beloved pet is away.

    • Males: Once the mature dog has completed and passed all health testing, the dog would be required to stay with the breeder for up to one week when required for breeding or simply need access to him for breeding related appointments.

    • Guardian has no right to puppies produced by this dog or to semen produced by the dog.

  • If at any time the breeder finds the guardian to be non-compliant, or in breach of contract, the dog shall return to breeder immediately. If the dog is altered OR bred purposefully without written consent of the breeder, guardian will owe breeder hefty compensation. Any legal costs involved with obtaining this payment will also be paid by guardian.
